Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of organisation is Positive Impact Tourism?

We are a company that is dedicated to help you to make the world a better place wherever you go. We do this by partnering up with local communities and organizations around the world to offer guests our so called ‘Positive Impact Experiences’ (PIEs) = tours/excursions that combine the more regular tourist activities with hands-on activities that directly benefit the local communities and/or nature visited.

Even though we are a commercial company, we stand for fair wages. This is why we only add a small markup to the fair wage price of the experiences we co-design with our partners.

What is a Positive Impact Experience?

All of our experiences include activities with which our guests make a direct positive impact on the local community and/or natural environment of the places they visit. What these activities are, depends on what our partners wish to offer and know works in their regions of operation. For instance, planting trees or helping to clean a beach.

Who are our partners?

Our partners are tour operators, tour guides, local charities, and other other related organizations that wish to act together with tourists to make the world a little better. All our partners have signed our ‘Code Of Conduct’ and therefore strive to make a difference in their communities and natural environment.

If you wish to become a Partner of PIT, please click on the button Become a partner at the top of the page. If you are unsure whether you can become a partner of PIT, please send us an email at info@positiveimpacttourism.com

How do we select the positive impact activities?

We design all Positive Impact Experiences (PIEs) together with our partners. We select only those experiences that meet our criteria and uphold our Code of Conduct for making a genuine positive impact. Of course, guests are asked to rate the experiences and we use these reviews to improve our selection and monitor our partners’ performance. We also aim to visit our partners and participate in the activities to get first-hand experience to provide feedback to our partners.

Is PIT a commercial company or a charity?

We are a commercial company and aim to grow our reach of positive impacts throughout the world in order to make it a little better.

Even though we are a commercial company, our revenue comes from small mark-ups that we add to the fair wage price of the experiences as determined by our partners. This way, we do not participate in the ‘race to the bottom’ that causes a lot of local tour operators and guides to lower their prices in fierce competition with each other.

With PIT experiences, you will know for sure that your travel fees actually end up in the hands of your local hosts. Please don’t hesitate to ask our partners about this when you inquire to book an experience.

Can I help PIT?

Yes, there are several ways in which you can help to make our goals a reality. First and foremost, of course, we would love it if you book positive impact experiences and leave your positive footprint on the world.

If you don’t want to or are unable to participate in our impact experiences, you can donate to us through the PayPal button. You do not need to have a PayPal account to do so. With your donations, we cover our basic operating costs and donate to projects organised by our partners.

Finally, as a startup, it is very difficult to reach potential guests who are interested in booking a positive impact experience. Especially with a low marketing budget. This means that we can really use your help to spread the word – by word of mouth to your family and friends and by following us on our social media and liking our posts. Reactions to social media posts make a big difference in visibility.

We sincerely appreciate any help that you can give us and our partners! Thank you so much!

Why not visit children’s residential setting?

In accordance with the Sustainability Compass of the Dutch Association for Small Travel Organisations (VvKR), our partners do not take guests to visit children’s residential settings, specifically orphanages, on our positive impact experiences. Unfortunately, tourist volunteer options in orphanages have in some cases resulted in negative side effects, hurting the mental well being of the children involved. This is why the VvKR has deemed visits to children’s residential settings as inappropriate. Even though our guests do not engage in volunteer work per se, we adhere to the Compass as determined by the VvKR and therefore do not visit any children’s residential settings.
