Sustainable Development Goals: how we contribute

In this article, we describe what we do to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Not just because, of course, these goals are very important and something to strive for in each type of industry including tourism. But also because it is important to explain how we can all make our contribution to these goals while having fun at the same time.

I would even go as far to say that supporting the Sustainable Development Goals hands-on while you are on vacation will make your time spend abroad much more fun than before!

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The SDGs, a set of 17 global objectives, address critical challenges, ranging from poverty and hunger eradication, quality education for all, decent work opportunities, responsible consumption and production to climate action, quality of life under water and on land and partnerships for sustainable development. Tourism can contribute to all of these goals since the tourism industry is ranked as the third highest global category in export earnings. It therefore ‘possesses the potential to contribute significantly to these goals’ (

It is estimated that a whopping 4 billion people will be travelling in 2024. Now imagine all of these people helping out to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, even if it is just in a small way. What a major change would that bring!

And that doesn’t even include all the companies involved in the tourism industry itself! Also a major potential force that could contribute to the SDGs if we change the ways we do business with you, the traveler.

To put it bluntly: together, we can definitely Travel The Change together!

Positive Impact Tourism’s Commitment to SDGs

Our mission and working methods align very with the global Sustainable Development Goals’ objectives,. And the activities in our Positive Impact Experiences contribute directly or indirectly to various SDGs. Engaging in one of our Experiences anywhere in the world therefore, means that you play a hands-on part in addressing challenges such as local economic growth, sustainable consumption and the responsible use of oceans and marine resources.

For instance, helping to distribute filters for clean water access in Bali (SDG 6), cooking for your local hosts in Malawi (SDG 2), participating in the production of sanitary pads for girls in Zambia so they can remain in school while on their periods (SDG 5), bringing supplies to elderly people in Kyrgyzstan (SDG 3), participating in village life in Nepal (SDG 10) or travelling with reusable drinking bottles in Peru (SDG 12). All activities that are great to do and super fun also!

Moreover, PIT’s commitment to fairness extends beyond the impact of your hands-on awesome activities on the local communities and the natural environment you visit on your journeys; it is also ingrained in our Fair Wage model.

Conventional commissions from travel agents in the tourism industry range from 30-35%. And local tour operators keep lowering their prices because they are in competition with each other to receive you as their client. This race to the bottom leaves local guides, drivers and cooks with virtually no opportunity to better their socio-economic status.

Our Fair Wage model however, ensures that over 90% of your travel fee goes to our partners. We are able to do this because we are keeping our overhead costs very low and work with only a small markup fee.

You are a change maker

So let’s recognize the massive power that the tourism industry and our own travels within it hold for the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals around the world. SDG 17 emphasizes the importance of partnerships for achieving the development goals. By choosing Positive Impact Tourism, you are part of a collective effort – a partnership that transcends traditional tourism models and actively contributes to the global pursuit of sustainability.

Therefore, as you plan your next getaways, please appreciate the multifaceted impact of your travel choices. Our alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals in both the Experiences that we design and the Fair Wage model we use, places us at the forefront of a movement towards responsible and sustainable travel. Your decision to explore the world with PIT is not just the choice of an enriching vacation; it’s an investment in a better future – a future where our journeys contribute to positive change and a more sustainable world.

Let’s Travel the Change!
